Food Trucks are small, independent businesses that lack the infrastructure of their brick-and-mortar restaurant counterparts. The Food Trucks Association aims to develop a full suite of tools to provide a competitive infrastructure and suite of tools and resources that will help Food Trucks to advance their business.

As thought leaders to the industry, and with continued innovation in the space, we know that food truck operators have the agility and ability to take strides toward sustainability within their business. Canada is a one of 193 member nations who have unanimously agreed to achieve the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030; we wish to do our part to encourage these best practices even for small operators like food trucks.

The students will be creating a guide for food truck operators that will draw the important parallels between each of the UN's SDGs and how they apply to each facet of their business. Production support for the guide will be provided.

Deliverables
  • Undertake a fulsome and robust understanding of the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals. An online course like this one is particularly useful for this -> https://www.edx.org/course/transforming-our-world-achieving-the-sustainable-d
  • Students are encouraged to conduct research to best understand the unique business case, needs and challenges for food trucks. The Association will facilitate connections with food truck operators for the students where possible.
  • As with any industry, businesses fall on various points along the spectrum of sustainable business practices, and many dont' understand the SDGs or their potential impacts, nor the risks if we fail to advance towards these goals. That said, students are encouraged to build plans for operators who may be along this spectrum, including "zero up" or "bottom up" plans for trucks who may be just getting started on their journey toward more sustainable business practices.
Mentorship

We are only too happy to provide:

  • A briefing document along with a facilitated overview of the important themes and needs for the project
  • Any key messages, target audiences, and available creative assets to help them understand the brand
  • A single point of contact (POC) assigned to your course and students, with a team of experts available for questions
  • Access to Slack, Google Workspace, and some other project management tools. We welcome the students so they can feel as though they are part of the team, or at arm's length - whatever is best.
  • Recognition of the school's involvement and the students' work in a media release (if permitted) and attribution of the students' contributions via LinkedIn or references as required.

The Food Trucks Association of Canada (FTAC) is a national, nonprofit organization which was first registered in Canada in the late summer of 2020, in the earlier period of onset of the pandemic.

An agile approach has been taken and we are now looking to redefine how we can best start and grow to support the industry. It is critically important to us to provide real and lasting value to our members.

Projects that are taken on by students and courses in the Riipen platform will be instrumental in our ability to build capacity to deliver that value.
To date, the work of the Food Trucks Association of Canada has been led by a volunteer Executive Director who is a passionate advocate in this space, and has leveraged a 75% student body of employees made available through various employment subsidies. It is a key part of our mandate to support student learning.
