Municipal Bylaw Scan in Canada - Research Project
FTAC is interested in drawing attention to gaps, barriers, and inequities that occur within the business landscape where Canadian Food Trucks operate - chiefly, municipalities. We are undertaking a series of research projects that are truly IDEAL for students to understand the inner workings of how good policy recommendations can have real impacts on the ability for small businesses to thrive and grow. In this project, FTAC is undertaking a cross-country review of various bylaws that impact Food Truck operators. This will be the 2nd year this data will be collected to inform our work. All of the research conducted will be online and can be done from anywhere.

Passive Income Strategy - Food Trucks Association of Canada
In the Association's interests to remain lean in its operation and affordable for all members, we are looking to diversify our revenues in a number of different ways. We'd love for students who are exploring digital marketing and digital strategy to help us with developing these plans. Passive income may come from: Affiliate marketing Donations and gifts Automated advertising strategy with aligned content placement Small partnerships and sponsorships that can be automated in their execution

Process Automation using Monday.com
We are looking to use Monday.com to build various automations within our organization. The rationale for this is as follows: As an organization supported by a 100% remote workforce, projects and workflows need to be transparent and easy to use. Monday.com has given us a grant license as a nonprofit organization - but this was after a careful review of several platforms including Jira, Notion, Trello and others. We are currently in our launch phase, and building relationships are of significant importance - and we don't anyone to get lost in the shuffle. We need clarity on who is doing what, when, and systematic sweeps to catch things before they fall through the cracks. We appreciate the opportunities that automation offers the Association to keep it both lean and nimble, to ensure that we can keep costs as low as possible for our members. This is a very high demand function for many organizations. We feel that this would be an excellent opportunity for students.

Competition for Canada's Food Trucks, Enabled Through Technology
Food Trucks are small, independent businesses that lack the infrastructure of their brick-and-mortar restaurant counterparts. The Food Trucks Association aims to develop a full suite of tools to provide a competitive infrastructure and suite of tools and resources that will help Food Trucks to advance their business. The Association is looking to refine and hone an alternative system to UberEats, Ritual, DoorDash and SkipTheDishes (among others) here in Canada. These apps generally charge food vendors upwards of 30% for their fees, inflating costs for consumers while also cutting into the bottom line for food trucks. We've purchased a script that is fairly well-documented. We'd like for this suite to be refined to meet our needs, while still maintaining its core code to ensure compatibility for future upgrades. We'd also like to test the software for possible vulnerabilities, and ensure that the full feature set can be used, including a loyalty program.

Accessibility in the Arts: CanAge
In Canada, many cultural institutions are still lagging when it comes to incorporating age-friendly design of not only digital properties like websites, but also built environments for temporary and fixed exhibition spaces. When form trumps function, this is not always the best scenario for Canada's aging population. It is well-established that older adults in Canada are broadly supportive of the arts through gifts of time, talent and dollars. CanAge is looking to build a program that will aid cultural attractions and institutions to become more age-friendly, dementia-friendly, and inclusive. As Canada continues to strengthen its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) efforts through policy changes, the federal government has also allocated spending to arts and culture institutions to bring them fully up to speed, making this an excellent time to craft a regimented process and infrastructure to drive this change forward.

Disaster Response Guides for Canada's Older Adult Populations
In 2021, many parts of the country were still in pandemic lockdowns. Older adults were instructed to isolation, leaving many without access to healthcare or the ability to obtain food. In addition, residents of Canada's westernmost province, British Columbia, as the region experienced catastrophic conditions due to extreme heat, fires and floods. Please see this 7-part series from the Vancouver Sun: https://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/fire-and-flood-bc-facing-two-extremes. The disparate response and lack of coordination between communities has been well-documented. As such, we are looking to obtain a differing perspective on disaster response, specifically from a US-based school program, as it relates to both the strategic design and the tactical response. We know that both community organizations and older adults themselves have a role to play, and the need for disaster preparedness education and planning is essential. We welcome the perspectives of the US Military.

Best Practices Guide(s) for use by Food Trucks across Canada
Food Trucks are small, independent businesses that lack the infrastructure of their brick-and-mortar restaurant counterparts. The Food Trucks Association aims to develop a full suite of tools to provide a competitive infrastructure and suite of tools and resources that will help Food Trucks to advance their business. The students can decide on one (or more) of the following projects: An employee training manual that will provide best-in-class, interprovincially relevant content to address key topics in workplace health and safety. This guide does not need to include food safety requirements. An employer guide that highlights the importance and advantages of strong workplace health and safety training, which should also include an employer self-assessment, to provide feedback to the employer for their own training and professional development for their business. Other suggested/proposed guides from the students.

The Ultimate Sustainability Guide for Canada's Food Trucks
Food Trucks are small, independent businesses that lack the infrastructure of their brick-and-mortar restaurant counterparts. The Food Trucks Association aims to develop a full suite of tools to provide a competitive infrastructure and suite of tools and resources that will help Food Trucks to advance their business. As thought leaders to the industry, and with continued innovation in the space, we know that food truck operators have the agility and ability to take strides toward sustainability within their business. Canada is a one of 193 member nations who have unanimously agreed to achieve the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030; we wish to do our part to encourage these best practices even for small operators like food trucks. The students will be creating a guide for food truck operators that will draw the important parallels between each of the UN's SDGs and how they apply to each facet of their business. Production support for the guide will be provided.

Can Canada's Foodservice Sector Meet Our Nation's Commitment to the UN SDGs?
SUSTAIN Magazine has established itself as a strong voice for sustainable processes and practices within the food and beverage supply chain - from agriculture to retail to restaurants. SUSTAIN has applied for a grant from the Canadian Periodicals Fund to strategically pivot to a media organization focused on driving awareness in the area of the UNs Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). https://sdgs.un.org/goals#goals Governments, NGOs and corporate citizenship all have a critical role to play in Canada, and around the globe. We would love for the students to develop a report on how Canada's agriculture, food and beverage production, and foodservice sectors are in a position to have impact on the UN's 17 SDGs. This is a holistic view of sustainability and would ask the student to develop narratives and key messages regarding industry impacts and how these can be mitigated in both the short and long term.

Innovation and Prevention for Living and Aging Well Campaign and Event Series
CanAge is looking to create an overarching campaign to build back the excitement in modern technologies and advancements in medicine, while also addressing distrust and misinformation. This program will include a campaign with digitally distributed resources (also available for print) as well as the curation of a speaker series that will be utilized in public libraries across Canada. This is to build on the success of an existing partnership with the Toronto Public Library , and will expand to include other public libraries in Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary, Winnipeg, Markham, and Welland. The student(s) will be instrumental in curating both the campaign elements and a templated approach to creating consistent virtual experiences through these library engagements.

Attitudes on Healthy Aging in Canada: A National Survey of Canada's Seniors
As a part of our mandate, we regularly consult with seniors on a myriad of topics and also consult with a broader group of stakeholders to make well-informed, evidence-based recommendations to all levels of government to advance the rights and wellbeing of all Canadians as we age. Please see our policy book at canage.ca/voices However, these consultations have been generally been focused on one specific topic, and largely these conversations and perspectives have centred around COVID-19 and the impacts of the pandemic before, during, and after lockdown periods. We feel it's an excellent time for Seniors be broadly surveyed on a number of topics to best understand their attitudes on inflation, gasoline prices, housing, healthcare, environmental considerations and financial security - among others. Possible reference datasets (not including the Census 2021 data) from Statistics Canada, and other notable information from global sources has been included under "Resources & Files".

Pneumococcal Pneumonia in Older Adults in Canada - Research Project
CanAge is well-known in Canada for drawing attention to gaps, barriers, and inequities that occur within the Canadian healthcare system on a national and provincial/territorial basis. Training for Financial Institutions: Marketing, Monetization & Product Launch
CanAge has been awarded grant funding from ISED (Innovation, Science and Economic Development) to develop key training resources for financial institutions to better understand how to support older adult clients. Key topics include recognizing the signs of clients who are victims of frauds and scams and working with older adult populations who may be experiencing cognitive decline, dementia, etc. In 2021, the Canadian Bankers Association launched a voluntary code of conduct called Voluntary Commitments and Codes of Conduct Code of Conduct for the Delivery of Banking Services to Seniors, or more commonly known as, the Seniors Banking Code. SEE: https://cba.ca/Assets/CBA/Documents/Files/Article%20Category/PDF/vol-seniors-en.pdf The training has been developed for front line employees at banks, credit unions, investment firms and all types of financial institutions. We are looking to now monetize and market this program as the capacity-building component of our grant.

Engaging the older adult workforce - CanAge
CanAge is a Canadian partner to the American Association for Retired Persons (AARP) on several initiatives, including their Living, Learning, and Earning Longer (LLEL) program. https://www.aarpinternational.org/initiatives/future-of-work/living-learning-and-earning-longer, which has international reach. As lifespans continue to extend, and people are at risk of outliving their retirement savings, CanAge is looking to engage Canadian employers in a meaningful way to bridge the gaps and barriers that exist for older adult workers who wish to work beyond the traditional retirement age of 65. We would love to engage several groups of students to consider the socio-economic impacts that an older workforce can bring to Canadian employers. A key part of our mandate is also to combat ageism, as many Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategies fail to address age as a factor. The intersection of age and other factors can disproportionately impact one's ability to learn, earn and thrive.

Strategic Pivot - SUSTAIN Magazine
SUSTAIN Magazine has established itself as a strong voice for sustainable processes and practices within the food and beverage supply chain - from agriculture to retail to restaurants. The pandemic had a tremendous impact on these industries, but also impacted our publication and its ability to generate revenue as a result. SUSTAIN wishes to bring these goals to life through our publication, but also through training & education, thought leadership and planned industry events. We would love for the students to develop a plan for our publication and action steps in order to achieve these outcomes.

Key Messages, Public Relations and Marketing Plans for National Food Trucks Assn
The Food Trucks Association of Canada registered as a federal nonprofit corporation in early Fall, 2020. However, this is the first year that its members have had the opportunity to operate without interruption due to COVID-19 impacts. We're looking to start fresh with renewed strategic plans, and this will result in changes to our marketing & communication, and monetization plans moving forward. Based on the outline of your course and student learning opportunity, this work looks to be an excellent fit.

Database Exploration Project for Food Trucks Association of Canada
In 2021, the Association undertook a policy research project that involved a scan of Canada's top 150 cities ranked by population to evaluate each municipality on the friendliness of their bylaws and other factors critical to the operation of food trucks within each jurisdiction. We would like to leverage this research, and intersect this data with other available datasets to build a highly beneficial BI Suite from which reports can be built for both elected representatives as well as for food truck operators. Additional datasets are as follows: SIMPLYANALYTICS (or Environics): https://www.library.yorku.ca/web/bbl/wp-content/uploads/sites/8/2012/06/SimplyAnalytics_Guide.pdf or other market research data StatsCan, Census 2021, and other available OpenData datasets (recommendations welcome) Elected representative data from sources such as https://represent.opennorth.ca/api/ (may require polynomial mapping for electoral riding boundaries, or the use of a postal code conversion file (PCCF)

Website and Material Translation Project
In Canada, there are a growing number of languages that are spoken in homes and in communities. While the Census 2021 data is not yet available with updated information, the 2016 Census has provided indications of growth in several key languages including: Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Polish and Russian, even though these may not be at the same pace. SEE: https://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2016/as-sa/98-200-x/2016010/98-200-x2016010-eng.cfm As an organization dedicated to advancing the rights and wellbeing of all Canadians as we age, we would also like to be as diverse and inclusive as possible. In addition to full translation in French, CanAge would appreciate the opportunity to work with translation students to also make its resources available in these other languages. Students may also have future opportunities to provide ongoing future translation of materials and website content.

HR Best Practices Guide(s) for use by Food Trucks across Canada
Food Trucks are small, independent businesses that lack the infrastructure of their brick-and-mortar restaurant counterparts. The Food Trucks Association aims to develop a full suite of tools to provide a competitive infrastructure and suite of tools and resources that will help Food Trucks to advance their business. The students can decide on one (or more) of the following projects: An employee training manual that will provide best-in-class, interprovincially relevant content to develop and hone soft skills in the areas of customer service, cash handling, special events, teamwork, receptive tourism & hospitality skills. This may also include numeracy, and basic food safety requirements An employer guide that highlights the importance and advantages of hiring a diverse and inclusive workforce, which should also include an employer self-assessment, to provide feedback to the employer for their own training and professional development Other suggested/proposed guides from the students

LMS System - Security Sweep and Recommendations
CanAge is building out a training program for financial institutions (FIs) including banks, credit unions, financial planners, and other employees within this space. We've opted for an LMS suite that has the flexibility we need to scale our training offerings, but we want to ensure that we're able to apply the right kind of infrastructure and security to ensure that the environment is well-protected against attacks. We are not collecting a ton of data, but we will collect user data (names, emails, branch locations, etc.) and we want to be able to provide assurances to the FIs that their employee data is as safe as it can be. This project was funded through a grant from Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) through this solicitation. https://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/Oca-bc.nsf/eng/ca02429.html Note: Data must be stored on Canadian-based servers.

Guide(s) to help food truck operators understand their financial and data risk
Food Truck operators are small, independent businesses that don't always have the same access to resources and materials of other businesses. Yet, many use the same types of systems which can suffer the same or greater exposure to vulnerabilities, especially without the proper precautions. For this project, we're looking to create a written guide that will be digitally distributed to food truck operators as a best practice guide to understanding their use of web access services, including mobile and hotspot security, as well as the security of their POS and payments systems. Students will gain a thorough understanding of a mix of systems in use within a food service business, and can recommend best practices for the food truck operators to avoid fraud, while also protecting data (or refraining from unnecessary data collection and storage) in order to reduce their overall risk.

New Website - Food Trucks Association of Canada
While the Food Trucks Association of Canada rebuilds in the first year that its members have had to operate without interruption due to COVID-19 impacts, the trucks have a desire to engender trust and transparency with their food offerings. We are looking for support with two (2) possible websites and we'd love for the students to take this on as a class challenge. Note: if it is not possible for two teams to take on the two sites, we'd gladly accept the assistance for either site. The two projects are as follows: 1. Association website. We're looking for a scalable framework for the website to grow into a robust content hub for members. The site will present both openly accessible and gated content for members. 2. General public website. To address and counter misinformation about food quality, food safety, etc. Will highlight food trucks from across Canada, and any special menu or dietary offerings they have, along with any important certifications (i.e. OceanWise, FeastON, etc.)
